Car donation is an excellent way to help people in need in your community. If you have an old vehicle you’re having a hard time selling or a non-operational vehicle sitting around collecting dust, you can do your part to help less fortunate people by giving your car to charity.
Vehicle donation typically works in one of two ways. First, you can call the charities of your choice to see which of them accept car donations. Decide which of these charities you want to donate your vehicle to, then make arrangements with that charity to bring your vehicle to an appropriate location. At that time, you will surrender your ownership of the vehicle to the charity and be given a receipt for the transaction.
Alternately, you can scrap your vehicle and donate the proceeds to the charity of your choice. Some charities will take care of everything for you by arranging to have the vehicle towed from your home to a scrapyard. If this service is not offered by your charity of choice, you can arrange to scrap the car yourself and donate the cash proceeds to the charity you want to support.
Scrapping a vehicle for profit is usually done only if the car is not operational and beyond repair. If your car still runs, you can donate it to a charity which will use it for their own purposes or donate it to a person or a family who desperately needs it. This can be life-changing for a needy family, so consider extending your generosity next time you are looking to get rid of a car.
However, make no mistake about it: car donation also benefits you. In virtually all jurisdictions, vehicle donation is tax deductible. While the exact rules vary from place to place, in most cases, the car’s value at the time you donated it can be deducted from your gross taxable income. This can save you hundreds of dollars come tax time in addition to giving you the good feeling that comes from helping others.
